Art Is Truth

My hand is NOT small... This is the biggest tomato I've ever grown!

We had some fabulous BLT sandwiches for dinner tonight…. nothing beats those home-grown tomatoes. It takes the big ones a long time to ripen around here, but it is worth the wait.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support me during the West Linn Arts Festival this weekend. Each time I do a show like this, I’m torn between the positive vibes I get from true aficianadoes and the stress and discouragement of dealing with inane comments, poor attendance, poor sales, etc. etc.

I know I’m not alone in these feelings, and lo-and-behold, here comes this post from Ricë Freeman-Zachery about Art Show Etiquette. If you’ve ever showed at an art fair, attended one, or plan to, this is a funny but true read.

I spent today unpacking, taking my son to get his wisdom teeth removed, nursing, and sanding down an end table for his new apartment

   Ruth, that is some tomato!

   Your post made me think about my own reluctance to put my art out into the market place. I have a million excuses, but perhaps the deepest truth is protecting myself from rejection and disappointment. I’ll chew on that for awhile.

   I do admire how tenatous you are.

   Hi Ruth, I had a nice chat with you at the West Linn Arts Festival and you mentioned you had a blog. Thought I would check it out, which (ahem) an hour later I am still here. I am an artist and enjoyed reading Rice post about Art Show Etiquette, I have shown my art but haven’t set up a booth at a Festival only at an Open Studio tour. Being an artist and walking into another artist booth I have respect and great intentions of offering only positive reactions, omg you’re not there for a critique session . I am thrilled to have the opportunity to see so many diverse artist at one setting, and sometimes buy that special piece that I can’t live without! Love that tomato-looks delicious.

   That can’t be a tomato you grew… its too big.
   as you might know BLT’s are my favorite sandwich.

   Thanks for the vote of confidence Donna! Rmember, I’m a farm-girl! I grew at least six this size… just had another one today in BLT’s Guess you’ll have to come visit in September next year

   Ruth,
   Not surprised at all by your tomato, “Farm Girl”. That luscious tomato might make its way into one your paintings. Maybe it will be the fabulous, deep red of the tomato that dominates the color of one of your paintings. Many years ago, you generously shared your amazing crop of cherry tomatoes with me. They found their way into one of my paintings and they are loved, to this day, by the owner. He owns a vegetable distribution company and the story behind that painting, “Ruth’s Runaway Tomatoes”, is one of my favorite to tell.
